Big Flowers

Do you have a day job? And name two things you really like about it.

I used to work as a line cook while I went to school but now I’ve made collage my job while I finish my degree. I get to make my own hours, choose my projects and spread my network in a really natural way, and I love the aesthetic you can get with paper. It’s been a blessing to be able to do music off a budget that’s fueled by my other art.

What is a comfort food that you really like, that you wish was healthier? What do you like about it? What does it remind you of?

I don’t know if it’s conventional comfort food but there’s this Lebanese snack called Kibbeh and when you fry it it’s really not the best for you but it’s so crispy and delicious. Imagine a meatball meeting a dumpling but the dumpling is also made of the filling, if that makes sense? You can make them with nearly anything, pumpkin has got to be my favorite.

When your family gets together, what do you do? And what do you wish you did?

At this point we’re all grown so me and my three sisters are rarely home at the same time, but when we do it’s really just chill. There’s always scrabble, and I usually wipe floor with the competition haha. I try not to look at family like “what do I wish” just because I’m always going to love them regardless, and I want them to be what they want to be and do what they want to do.

What’s a song or artist you used to “hate,” but you’re into recently? Why do you like it? What stopped you from liking it before?

Super recently I fell for Uzi. I still don’t love a lot of his billboard stuff but damn, Luv is Rage is so amazing. I slept on it forever just because this one scrubby forehead ass dude, only person I’ve ever thrown hands with, was such a stan of Uzi. I’m tight now because I missed out on so much, but this Fustal Shuffle goes so off and I was here for that, lol.

What do you feel is going to get better in the next ten years?

Any mode of creativity has nothing but room to grow as long as the contemporary culture behind it dedicates to the progression of the craft.

What have you failed at personally–not professionally–that you’re still working on?

Time, I just never seem to have enough and I never plan it the right way. I’ve missed out on so many things just because my time was kept poorly, and I’m working on it, it just takes time lol.

What’s the biggest professional mistake you’ve ever made and what did you learn from it?

One time I dated my bosses daughter, that was a terrible experience, and I feel like the lesson is pretty evident.

What’s your favorite song of all time and why? (Tough question. Do your best.)

These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You) – Thelonious Monk this was the easiest question so far.

What’s your most favorite place you’ve ever been and why? Doesn’t have to be travel related.

Young World at Abrons Art Center. If you were there you get it. If not I think they’re doing it next year.

What time did you feel most connected with the world and human beings?

Right now, every day goes by I really feel more and more a part of everything. I grew up with a disconnect, but I’m moving with the current at this time in my life, and I feel in a comfortable pocket of contemporaries, which brings me a lot of joy and opportunities.

If you had one reunion with all the friends and family you wanted, what activity would you all do?

Super Smash Bros. this is an invitation to anybody who thinks they can take on my Wii Fit Trainer l come big body with the green tank top, and I’m accepting challenges.

What is your name and your band/project’s name? Where can we find you on the internet?

My name is Michael but I release music under Big Flowers. You can search for big flowers but you won’t really find anything related to me, just large flowers, which are honestly really nice to look at instead. If you want to tap in to me though my Instagram is @bigflowers.jpg where I keep the content the most current.
